Pool and Spa Plaster and Resurfacing

StandardPlaster

  • Standard white plaster is the most common surface seen in pools today. This is primarily because when most pools were built the other surfaces did not exist.
  • Pros:
    • Least expensive of all surfaces.
    • Smooth surface
    • Works will with contemporary architecture
  • Cons
    • Color dulls as it ages (can acid wash 2-3x to rejuvenate color)
    • Mottles / Stains over time
    • Becomes rough, can chip/flake over time

ColoredPlaster

  • A less expensive option for color than pebble, quartz, or hydrazzo
  • Colored plaster is similar to plaster except it has color
  • Typically 20-30% addition in cost
  • Pros:
    • Offers a uniqueness in color that white plaster cannot
    • Less expensive than Pebble or other colored options
  • Cons
    • Colored plaster will mottle / change colors in different areas
      • Will not stay a consistent solid color – it will mottle, “marbleize”
      • Some people do not like this element, others actually prefer it.
      • For a consistent color for the life of surface go with Pebble or Hydrazzo

Quartz

  • Quartz is an aggregate composition similar to a pebble application. Finer aggregate rocks than the pebble.
    • Pros
      • Many color options
      • More durable than plaster
    • Cons
      • Can chip or flake over time

100%Quartz Aggregate

  • Instead of just adding quartz to the plaster mixture you can have your surface be 100% quartz. This aggregate composition is similar to a pebble application whereas the quartz additive is still a plaster mixture.
  • Quartz can come in a larger type mixture or very small mixture. The larger quartz is closer to that of pebble, where as the fine quartz mixture is more like a standard plaster finish.

Pebble

  • Pebble is increasingly becoming the surface of choice in many backyards for a couple reasons.
  • Pros
    • Unique look and feel
    • Durable
    • Many color options
  • Cons
    • Considered rough on feet by few
    • Pebbles will flake off in small areas over time

GlassBead

  • Glass bead is a beautiful aggregate surface similar to pebble, except glass beads. Used on many high end customs.
  • Pros:
    • Shines and Sparkles
    • Multiple color options
    • More durable than plaster
  • Cons
    • Expensive
    • Glass beads tends to flake off more frequently than pebble

Pebble/Glass Combo

  • A select few colors are available in the pebble glass combo for those that want pebble, but are willing to spend a little extra for some slight sparkle.

Hydrazzo

  • If you are looking for color, but also smooth high end durable surface than the polished marble surface, Hydrazzo, is your best bet.
  • Pros
    • Myriad of colors available
    • Strong, durable and long lasting
    • Smoothest of all surfaces

    • Extremely durable and long lasting
    • Able to patch if needed
  • Cons
